One thing that I've noticed lacking with the majority of teachers I've ever had is their failure to explain the purpose/end result of a lecture or technique at the beginning of their lesson. A clear idea of the applications of a new concept (either through in-class demonstration or a simple discussion) makes learning a new subject infinitely easier.
